| Dong Ha, the capital of Quang Tri Province, is at the junction of Highway 1 running north and south and Highway 9 running east and west. The base was only 12 miles from the DMZ that separated North and South Vietnam. Dong Ha was a permanent helicopter and major logistics base supporting the northern area of South Vietnam. It was the location of the northernmost aviation units in Vietnam. Primarily a Marine Corps base supporting units of the 3rd Marine Division, the Air Force had Forward Air Controllers assigned to the base. A Radar Control Center (Skyspot) supported U.S. offensive operations in I Corps. The Navy unit at Dong Ha and Cua Viet on the Cua Viet River transported supplies and ammunition to the 3rd Marine Division on the DMZ and elsewhere in I Corps. |
